Education

  • BA, Sociology, Wright State University
  • MA, Sign Language Education, Gallaudet University

Amanda Hix received a master's degree in Sign Language Education from Gallaudet University. She joined the Interpreter Education Program at Sinclair College in 2011 as a Sign Language Mentor for the ASL Lab for seven years and then became an ASL professor ever since. She currently teach all levels of American Sign Language, Deaf Studies and hold Professional Certification with ASLTA.

Amanda is a second-generation Deaf woman who loves spending time with family while enjoying the outdoors, camping, kayaking, traveling, and exploring new places.

Her ASL students undergo a transformation similar to that of caterpillars. She provides them with the nourishment they need to learn the language, such as vocabulary, grammar, communication, and culture. As students learn, Amanda ensures that they build a solid foundation within the Deaf community. Once they get comfortable in class, they feel safe enough to cocoon themselves in our classroom, where they progress in their language comprehension. Eventually, students emerge from the chrysalis as beautiful butterflies as ASL users.
